Alan Brazil claims Kemar Roofe’s UEFA ban was too lenient
Alan Brazil has doubled down on his Kemar Roofe verdict after the Rangers forward was handed a four-match ban by UEFA on Wednesday.
Roofe, 28, was handed a straight red card for a high-boot on Slavia Prague goalkeeper Ondrej Kolar just minutes after his introduction from the bench in their Europa League round of 16 second-leg on March 18.
TalkSPORT host Brazil took to the airwaves the following day to label it as “dangerous play” and said he would receive a “hefty ban”. [talkSPORT Twitter, 19/03/21]
Speaking on talkSPORT Breakfast [06:00, 15/04/21] the huge Cetic fan went one further and intimated UEFA had not been strong enough.
Brazil said Roofe should have received a similar punishment to the ten-game ban Slavia defender Onrej Kudela was handed for racially abusing Glen Kamara in the same game.
He said: “I must admit I couldn’t sleep last night after Roofe got banned for four games for that challenge on the [Slavia] keeper.”
Gers legend Ally McCoist hit back: “I’m telling you right now he should not have got banned. It was an accident.”
Brazil had the last comment, “He fractured his skull! Four games…I think it should have been nine games but there you go,” he said.
Baffling
To suggest Roofe should be banned for anywhere near as long as Kudela is utterly ludicrous.
Sure, the challenge on Kolar was reckless and he deserved the red card he was issued even though he may not have intended to cause damage.
It was dangerous and in the modern day you just can’t raise your foot that high, and video evidence was damning.
But that’s where the matter should end.
A straight three-match ban for dangerous foul play should have sufficed and we’re not sure why UEFA have seen fit to add an extra game on, and Brazil’s claim that they should have gone further is bonkers.
His nine-game suggestion would be one less than the 10 meted out to Kudela for his racial abuse towards Gle Kamara – what sort of example would that be setting?
Whether it was tongue-in-cheek or not, Brazil should be a bit more careful with his comments next time.
