Ex-Rangers ace Andy Halliday recounts Celtic gesture that left him angry
Ex-Rangers midfielder Andy Halliday has recounted a story during his time at the club when he was left fuming with a Celtic fan.
Speaking on the Open Goal podcast [13/02/21] Halliday, who left the Light Blues last year, said he was ribbed for a dismal 5-1 defeat to Celtic under Pedro Caixinha in 2017.
“Don’t try and treat me like a bam when I’m with my missus,” he said.
“I was in the Apple Store and some wee guy – I’m talking 14 or 15-years-old – has came up and asked for a photo.”
He continued: “So his mate goes ‘when’ and he goes like that [holds up fingers in a 5-1 gesture].
“I just went: ‘Give us that phone, do you think you’re a hard man, aye?’
“I gave him it back and walked out! I couldn’t do anything! I can’t chuck his phone, I can’t delete it or nothing!
“So I gave him it back and walked out of the shop.”
Dark days are behind us
How far we’ve come from that mess of a side under Caixinha.
We’ve had a few bad managers over the years but the Portuguese man is the pick of the bunch.
That 5-1 defeat at Ibrox in April 2017 was harrowing and was an early sign of what was to come under his stewardship.
We had no clear identity and it was no surprise to see him sacked six months later.
Graeme Murty took the reigns on for most of the remainder of the season, with a brief stint by Jimmy Nicholl, but it was left to Steven Gerrard to pick among the ruins left behind.
Gerrard has revived the club and the Light Blues are transformed under his tutelage and we are now unbeaten in our last four Old Firm games while picking up the Scottish Premiership title to dash Celtic dreams of 10-in-a-row.
Hopefully Halliday’s comments are the last time that fateful game gets mentioned again and we can focus on the future which is dazzlingly bright under Gerrard.
