Rangers want to sign Blackpool striker Jerry Yates

Rangers are considering a summer swoop to sign in-form Blackpool striker Jerry Yates, according to The 72.

Nottingham Forest, Blackburn and Bristol City were linked to Yates at the end of March [The Sun] and it seems his 20 goals in all competitions this season have attracted Gers’ attention.

The 72 now claims Steven Gerrard is keen to add to his attacking options in the summer and for Yates, there’s a move to Ibrox “on the cards” ahead of next season with it unlikely that he’ll remain at Bloomfield Road past the next transfer window.

Rangers

Yates signed for Blackpool last summer and the 24-year-old is making the most of his first regular stint in English League One, helping the Tangerines to fourth place in the table.

He achieved promotion with Swindon under Richie Wellens and his former boss described him as a striker who is “good at everything” [EFL on Quest, 03/04].

The Daily Mail’s secret scout suggests Yates is a “leader of the line” who shows “enthusiasm” in working hard to close down defenders.

Back-up option?

There is a lot to like about Yates.

He is a technical forward with an eye for goal and his tireless work is a nice attribute to possess.

Rangers

He is not at the same level as Alfredo Morelos so we would be concerned if the club is eyeing him as the Colombian’s replacement.

That is unlikely, and instead Yates could be a good third or fourth option for us.

We are going to have a tight schedule next year with European fixtures and a domestic cup to contend with.

Rotating players and maintaining sharpness will be key, therefore, and stealing players like Yates is the way to go.

It took the forward a while to get his career going but he is now on the up.

He scored 14 goals in a promotion season last time and now looks set to get more than 20 in what could be another successful campaign this time around.

Interest from the English Championship shows his stock is rising so we would be wise to make a swoop while he still remains relatively cheap.
