Allan McGregor continues to defy Sutton’s words with top-class display v Hibs
Allan McGregor showed why he is being tipped to be named as the player of the year for Rangers with a first-class performance against Hibernian.
The goalkeeper has been magnificent this season and pulled off four saves to ensure Gers maintained their 100% record at Ibrox this term.
Despite his brilliant form Chris Sutton took an opportunity to have a swipe at the 39-year-old after our Europa League exit on BT Sport.
The pundit criticised McGregor and suggested he was at fault for Slavia’s opening goal.
As quoted by The Boot Room, Sutton said, “McGregor will be disappointed.
“For a goalkeeper of his quality, maybe he reacts a bit late there. Good pace on the cross, good header, but a keeper of his standard would have expected to keep that out.”
It is possible McGregor heard those comments, and if he has then he has gone about proving Sutton wrong in brilliant fashion.
A few days after that European tie McGregor played a huge role in our 1-1 draw with Celtic.
He kept us in the game with seven saves which helped him to a SofaScore rating of 7.9 – the highest of any player on the pitch.
And against Hibs the veteran played an equally important role with four saves, per SofaScore.
McGregor twice denied forward Martin Boyle before pulling off an amazing stop from Kevin Nisbet’s freekick.
He even got a touch on Nisbet’s header and was unlucky not to keep it out for Hibs’ goal.
His importance is clear for all to see and he will likely be key to us progressing in the cup against Celtic next week.
Sutton’s comments were surprising as the keeper has been excellent all season long.
Ally McCoist has certainly been impressed and labelled McGregor “outstanding” when highlighting his importance to the side last month [Sky Sports 11:00, 21/03/21].
Sutton should feel foolish about putting McGregor down as the Scot has proved he is the best keeper in the division before and after that one incident.
