The report claims the Light Blues have contacted Morecambe about the Senegal-born winger who spent a couple of years in the academy of La Liga giants Atletico Madrid.

He joined his current side in 2018 after a spell at semi-professional side West Didsbury & Chorlton but he will become a free agent on June 30 [Transfermarkt].

High pedigree

He may have spent some time in the doldrums of the English semi-professional leagues but Mendes Gomes learnt his trade at one of the elite superpowers of European football.

A two-year spell at Atletico Madrid highlights that he was once regarded highly by a top Champions League team and he has shown immense bravery to make the move to England and work his way up the leagues.

He may not be a star-studded name that Bears fans will be aware of but he could be another canny signing made by Ross Wilson and Steven Gerrard.

Gers have had plenty of success plucking young talents from sides in the EFL, notably Joe Aribo from Charlton Athletic, and Mendes Gomes could be the latest name to pitch up in Glasgow.

Furthermore his upcoming free agency makes him a risk-free option on what would surely be low wages.

The underlying numbers back up the goals as well – according to Wyscout he attempts 3.7 dribbles per 90 with a 48.2% completion rate.
