McCoist celebrates as Sutton names James Tavernier Scotland Player of the Year

Chris Sutton finally put his Rangers anti-agenda to one side and agreed with Ally McCoist that James Tavernier has been Scotland’s Player of the Year.

The pair discussed the right-back in light of his signing of a contract extension this week, with the pair both describing the development as great news for the Gers.

The two pundits often bicker on BT Sport’s Scottish Football Extra, but on this occasion Sutton had McCoist celebrating with his words.

McCoist said, “Brilliant for James Tavernier Scotland’s player of the year, brilliant news for Rangers and brilliant news for Scottish football fans, there’s no doubt about it.

“Quite remarkable, he thoroughly deserves to sign a new contract and Rangers are delighted to have him. It’s great news all round.”

Host Darrell Currie then reminded Sutton of a time when he was disparaging of Tavernier and his performances in the past.

Sutton said, “Oh why are you bringing this up this is totally unfair Darrell.

“James Tavernier over the years when he hasn’t performed myself and Ally have both criticised him. I have called in the past Rangers serial losers because they were.

“I can’t call them that anymore, this season they have been brilliant. I’m with Ally, Tavernier player of the season and I’m absolutely made up for Rangers and their fans and Ally that he’s signed a new deal.

“He’s been brilliant this season and I take my hat off to him.”

Player of the Year

There are a number of contenders for player of the year for the Gers.

Steven Davis, Allan McGregor and Conor Goldson have also been superb in clinching number 55.

But as captain Tavernier has led the way and he has been part of our rise since 2016, so deserves the success more than most.

News of his contract extension was warmly received and like Davis and McGregor he has a chance of making himself an icon at Ibrox.

He will be here until at least 2024 and that will mean eight years of service, and possibly several more league and cups wins.

There are few players like Tavernier in the division too.

He has helped our defence concede just eight goals in the 29 league games he has played in while producing 11 goals and 10 assists in that time.

That is why we agree with McCoist and Sutton that he has been the best player in Scotland this year.
