Exclusive: Alex McLeish delighted as James Tavernier signs new Rangers contract

We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…

Alex McLeish has reacted to the “tremendous” news that Rangers captain James Tavernier has signed a new contract this week.

Despite being currently out injured, the defender has put pen-to-paper on an extra two years on his deal that will see him remain at Ibrox until 2024.

McLeish has hailed both the club and player for getting this deal over the line, with everyone involved said to be “extremely happy.”

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “That’s tremendous.

“We’ve seen James rise and rise. In parts of his career, we have seen people question his defending, question other things, and he just comes through all of that.

“He learned his experiences throughout the time, his performance level got higher and higher, more consistent as each game passed.

“For him to get rewarded with a contract extension is great for James, but also a real coup for Rangers.

“You don’t know what’s going on in anyone’s mind, it seems as though he’s extremely happy at Ibrox and captain them to this historic title.”

Rangers

Tremendous.

The good news just keeps on coming this week, with fellow defender Leon Balogun also signing a new contract at Ibrox on Friday afternoon.

Tavernier is on another level to Balogun, of course, but the squad depth with quality players is very dangerous for other sides in Scotland.

McLeish is spot on with his verdict that the skipper is getting better and better each season, and should that be the case for the next three seasons; we could be seeing some record-breaking numbers.

The good times have well and truly started in Glasgow.
