Alex McLeish ‘delighted’ as Leon Balogun secures Rangers contract – Exclusive
We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Alex McLeish insists that Rangers will be “delighted” as Leon Balogun triggered an automatic one-year contract extension at Ibrox.
The Sun reported this week that after the Nigerian international made his 23rd start for the club, his deal would be extended until the end of next season.
McLeish believes that the versatility of Balogun has been a real saviour for the Gers this season, with the defender recently playing right-back.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “He’s proved versatile.
“We didn’t really see his best moments as a right-back, but it’s like a novelty for a central player to be used there.
“He’ll be delighted to secure his future and get on with his centre-halve prowess, but he’s always got that in his locker that he can adjust at any given time.”
No resting.
The Gers may have cruised to the Scottish Premiership title this season, but they are already planning for the future beyond that.
Steven Gerrard will want the majority of this side to stick together at Ibrox, and make this a period of dominance after finally ending Celtic’s nine-year streak.
Having arrived on a free transfer in the summer, Balogun has proved great value after suffering at Wigan in the previous campaign.
Gerrard needs players he can trust, and there aren’t much better than his experienced defender in that department; this is smart business.
