McLeish: Zungu is fighting for his Rangers future with club yet to make a decision on transfer
We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Bongani Zungu may have played his last game for Rangers after the SFA hit him with a six-game ban for his role in the ‘party five’ scandal.
Two of those games are suspended which means he’ll probably only miss four matches, though if he has a role to play when he is available again remains to be seen.
His loan deal from French side Amiens is soon to expire though Alex McLeish insists he still has plenty to play for at Ibrox.
“You know it’s difficult to play for Rangers and the pressures it can bring to some people,” McLeish exclusively told Ibrox News.
“He [Zungu] just has to give his best in every game, he will want Stevie [Gerrard] to recognise him as an actual member of this Rangers team.
“You’re playing for your future. If Rangers have decided that they won’t take him on then he must do things for himself.
“That’s to give his best performances when Stevie showcases him.
“He’s playing for two reasons, one mainly for his own future and another for his Rangers career.”
Zungu’s loan spell hasn’t quite worked out how anyone imagined.
The South African still only has one Scottish Premiership start to his name this season and he has very few decent performances on his record.
There are simply much better options in the midfield and if Rangers were signing Zungu on loans as a try before you buy, they’ve played a blinder.
Serious questions would be asked if Zungu has been signed on a permanent deal as he simply isn’t good enough for us.
That could change if he shows his best stuff before the end of the season but after this SFA ban, that seems unlikely.
In other Rangers news, Thursday’s announcement is the best bit of business Rangers have done in years.
