Ally McCoist and Lee Dixon in awe of Steven Davis as he hits int’l milestone

Ally McCoist and Lee Dixon almost ran out of superlatives when praising Rangers star Steven Davis for breaking the UK international cap record on Wednesday.

Davis earned his 126th cap as Northern Ireland drew 0-0 with Bulgaria, putting him one ahead of England’s Peter Shilton.

The ITV pundits praised the dedication and professionalism of Davis, who made his international debut in 2005.

On ITV’s highlights show, McCoist said, “It’s amazing, absolutely amazing it really is. He’s a phenomenal player, keeps himself fit, looks after himself.

“He was a joy to work with, the same Steven Davis would come in every day [and] you knew what you were getting. He deserves every success.”

Dixon added, “It’s astonishing. I know how hard it is just to keep a club career going week in week out but to keep an international one going as well.

“Meeting up every single international break when other players are getting a rest here and there. As you get older to have that consistency is absolutely amazing.”

Huge accomplishment

Davis deserves all the praise coming his way and we actually feel that his achievement has gone under the radar slightly.

If he was English or playing in the Premier League there would be endless applause but because he’s at Rangers he is getting overlooked slightly.

The truth is that there are few players capable of matching Davis.

Big-name players like Alan Shearer, Gary Neville and even Dixon retired from international duty some years before their 36th birthdays.

And yet Davis just keeps on going and is as important for both club and country as he has ever been.

There is no sign of him stopping yet too and next year he will help Gers retain the Scottish title.

He may also have a World Cup in mind though qualification with Northern Ireland is a very difficult challenge.
