Report: Dramatic twist to Champions League ‘outrage’ that sells out Rangers
The Athletic has reported that the meeting to ratify the Champions League changes due to take place today has been pushed back to April 19.
Simon Jordan called the proposed changes an “outrage” and “preposterous” on his talkSPORT show on Tuesday morning but Jim White was certain the changes would go through.
However, in a late dramatic twist, this decision has now been pushed back and the issue that’s contentious to Rangers is at the heart of it.
The Athletic claims “there is considerable disagreement in the wider football community about some of those changes, most notably the idea to allocate at least two of the four extra Champions League slots to teams that fail to qualify by right from their domestic leagues but have strong European pedigrees.”
And Rangers has a strong ally south of the border.
The Athletic went on to say, “The Premier League and all the other domestic leagues are not happy about the number of games increasing or the plan to award Champions League places based on UEFA club coefficients.”
Good news but…
This is good news but at the moment it’s only a stay of execution.
Simon Jordan and Jim White were up in arms about the proposed changes and made it very clear how they feel about the impact it would have on Rangers.
This is a competition that used to be reserved for the champions of their domestic leagues.
Since then it’s been diluted time and time again, but the recent changes shift the goalposts in favour of the elite clubs in Europe.
No fans want a closed shop in Europe and there’s no way that the champions of Scotland should get less of a chance to compete than the seventh-placed club in England.
Thankfully, the majority of the Premier League don’t want the changes either and the way voting works there means an elite minority won’t get its way.
It will be fascinating to see what happens now although we imagine the Champions League juggernaut will find some way to bulldoze its changes through to the detriment of Rangers.
Money talks.
