Rangers source responds to ban for COVID rulebreakers

Rangers are “considering” their options after five Rangers players were banned for six matches by the SFA for breaking COVID protocol.

Nathan Patterson, Bongani Zungu, Calvin Bassey, Brian Kinnear and Dapo Mebude, who is on loan at Queen of the South, will all serve immediate four-match bans with two games suspended if they become repeat offenders.

Glasgow Times journalist Chris Jack has since shared what a source at Ibrox said in response to the bans for the quintet. The source said: “We are considering all our options and will make further comment if required.”

What is there to consider?

We’re not quite sure how Rangers can have anything to consider after this.

All five players broke the rules and all five players should be punished accordingly.

Steven Gerrard has already punished them internally at Ibrox and all are now going to serve bans.

It’s been a long time since they broke the rules and a lot has been forgiven due to how well Patterson has played in the first-team.

While the jury is still out on Zungu and whether his loan deal will be made permanent, Bassey’s future at Ibrox also seems to be secure with nothing suggesting he’s completely dropped out of the picture.

The bans are a blow for Rangers in the meantime as they may find it hard to rest Borna Barisic at left-back without Bassey while James Tavernier has been out injured for a few weeks and there won’t be a Patterson to replace him.

Zungu’s ban could also have a bit of an impact with Ryan Jack out but this isn’t something the Gers won’t be able to overcome.
