Rangers fan Q and A – Why Kent may stay at Ibrox despite Premier League interest

Every week we’ll be asking Rangers fans on our Facebook account for questions that will be answered by Ibrox News editor Ben Wild. You can join in by following the Rangers Insider Facebook account and watching out for weekly mailbag posts.

With the season drawing to a close we are beginning to see more and more reports linking Rangers players to other clubs.

This is only natural with so many quality players enjoying a very successful season with possibly another trophy on the horizon.

One player who is bound to be heavily linked with a move away is Ryan Kent after a sensational season in which he played a huge role in us winning 55.

Rangers

One Rangers fan asked us why Kent would want to leave Ibrox to go and play for a mid-table Premier League side after interest from Leeds last summer and our Rangers editor has explained why it isn’t as simple as that.

This is a very good point and I’m sure it is one Steven Gerrard will be making to his players if any of them want to leave. The Rangers journey is far from over as a by-product of winning the league is the return of Champions League football.

For Rangers players, the question is this. Can you play for a better club that will feature in next year’s Champions League than Rangers? For all of them, the answer will be ‘no’. Champions League football is a massive draw and it is a card the club are sure to play when trying to sign players this summer. It stands to reason that some players will be convinced to stay based on the prospect of playing in Europe’s premier competition.

We know Kent was the subject of interest from Leeds last summer and it is entirely possible they will return for him this year. There are bound to be other clubs interested too and you’d think the main threat will be from the Premier League as an English talent.

Can Kent play for a top-four Premier League side? The answer, once again, is no. It depends on what Kent wants to do. If he wants to take a supposed ‘next step’ then a Premier League move makes sense.

We hope he doesn’t leave but he may want to test himself in a league with a higher reputation. Though it is hard to see Kent playing for another side that will regularly win trophies and get European football. He needs to make a very important decision if a bid comes in.
