Alex McLeish: Rangers players will be thankful for international break – Exclusive

We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…

Alex McLeish has delivered an insight into Auchenhowie and the Rangers squad during the international break this month.

The Bears have finally been handed a rest after a whirlwind few weeks which included the Old Firm and the Europa League clash with Slavia Praha.

McLeish has shared that Steven Gerrard will have downsized training dramatically, and will be handing his squad numerous days off.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “With the international games, now they have a fortnight which can heal people mentally and physically.

“But, the irony is the clubs quite enjoy that there is a break. The training gets downsized a little bit, and there will be days off for the players.

“That’s what happens when there’s an international break. Although every player wants to play for their national team, I’m sure there are a few players out there thinking, thank god they’re getting a rest.”

Perfect timing.

This international break couldn’t have come at a better time for Gerrard and his squad.

James Tavernier and Ryan Jack are both suffering from long-term injuries and could return after this break, although they have a week after the first game back.

Gerrard will undoubtedly name a weakened squad against Cove Rangers in the Scottish Cup, meaning that Tavernier and Jack could be ready for the game with Hibernian.

Fingers crossed, the Bears could have a full-strength squad available for the final five Scottish Premiership games of the season as we look to secure the invincibles campaign.

In other Rangers news, Alex McLeish claims Ryan Jack may not be fully fit until 2021/22
