Rangers outcast Glenn Middleton eyes second St Johnstone loan

Glenn Middleton has started the road to recovery from his Rangers wilderness with some dazzling displays for St Johnstone and he is upbeat on his future.

The 21-year-old has had a rough time of late, struggling to capture his best form in temporary spells at Hibernian and Bradford City last season before being frozen out of the first-team squad at Ibrox during this campaign.

However he joined the Saints on loan in January and he has hit the ground running as he aims to reignite his ailing career, and last weekend he clinched their place in the Premiership top six with a crucial goal v Ross County.

As quoted by MailSport, and relayed on the Daily Record website, Middleton is eyeing an extended spell at McDiarmid Park.

“It’ll be down to me what happens beyond the summer. It’ll be about what my performances warrant,” he said.

“It’s down to me. I need to impress now, every time I step on to a pitch.

“Whether it’s the St Johnstone manager I’m working with now or the manager at Rangers, it’s completely down to me.

“If another loan move was right for me, would it appeal to come back to St Johnstone? Of course but I’m open-minded and I can’t think too far ahead.”

Time on his side

Despite his struggles Middleton’s youthful years and recent form suggest there is still plenty of life left in his Ibrox career.

He was brought in from Norwich City in 2018 and burst onto the scene during the 2018/19 campaign, scoring five times in 28 appearances.

However he has featured just once for the Light Blues since 2019, a League Cup outing against Falkirk on November 29 earlier this season, and his time at Rangers appeared to be fizzling out.

Middleton jumped ship in January when he was offered a loan move to St Johnstone and while he is still yet to start a match it looks like he is starting to piece together the mystery puzzle that is his talent.

At 21 there is still plenty of room left for improvement and that is why another loan spell next season makes complete sense.

The likelihood is that Gers would struggle to command a sizeable fee this summer but another move to get minutes would drive up his fee if they decide to sell him on in 2022.

His contract runs until 2023 [Transfermarkt] so Steven Gerrard has plenty of time to assess his abilities and decide what to do next.
