Rangers ever-present Connor Goldson voices Premier league ambition
Connor Goldson has been ever-present for Rangers this season but admits he could eye a return to England in order to achieve his Premier League ‘dream’.
The 28-year-old has been an absolute rock in the centre of the Light Blues defence this season as they have recorded countless shut-outs and shipped just 10 goals in 33 Premiership outings so far.
Goldson has played in every single one of Rangers’ mammoth 48-game season so far and a his loss from Steven Gerrard’s side would be inconceivable.
But as he told The Times, he has burning ambitions south of the border that he still wants to fulfil.
“My dream was always to play week in, week out in the Premier League,” he said.
“Whether that happens, time will tell but I think for any English player that’s the dream.
“Playing in Europe against really top teams has made me realise I am good enough to play at that level.”
Irreplaceable
The stats paint the picture – Goldson is absolutely integral to this Gers side.
He is the only member of this squad to play in every game this season and that speaks volumes for how highly he is regarded by Gerrard and his coaching staff.
The Gers boss said he was an “absolute mountain for this team, a warrior” back in February [Sunday Post].
Filip Helander and Leon Balogun have flitted in and out of the side but Goldson has remained the one constant in the centre of defence to help marshall Rangers to title No.55 and a run to the last 16 of the Europa League.
James Tavernier is the club captain but Goldson is the vocal leader of the team and he commands a level of authority every time he steps out onto the pitch.
He is nearing the conclusion of his third campaign at Ibrox and there is the sense that there is much more to come from him and the rest of this squad under Gerrard’s tutelage.
However he is from England and it is hard to deny him the opportunity of returning home and making a name for himself in the Premier League.
Goldson only made three appearances there for Brighton so he has unfinished business – we just hope he hangs on a little longer before making the move back down south.
