Leon Balogun defends Rangers and fans for title celebrations after SNP criticism

Leon Balogun has defended Rangers and supporters for taking part in title celebrations earlier this month.

The defender rejected claims from the SNP that the club could have deterred the crowds that gathered outside Ibrox for the 3-0 win over St Mirren.

He also showed an understanding of the feelings of Rangers fans, who had to wait for ten years to celebrate a title win.

In an interview with German outlet Kicker, Balogun said, “I can’t imagine that a long-awaited championship would have gone differently anywhere else.

“And I don’t think the club is responsible for that. The club can’t seal off all of Glasgow.

“You can only appeal but please, especially in this lousy situation that we have been experiencing for over a year, there was something that made many people in Glasgow incredibly happy. And then they let their emotions run free.

“Given the current pandemic circumstances, was it the best decision? Probably not. Is it still emotionally understandable? Absolutely.”

Talking sense

The approach of the SNP over this matter was totally out of touch with reality.

Rangers supporters were always going to gather in celebration and there was nothing the football club could have done about it.

The backlash from John Swinney and Nicola Sturgeon was merely an attempt to appear tough on Covid restrictions.

We did what was in our power to warn against people travelling to the stadium and did so once again for last week’s game at Parkhead.

Funnily enough the club got little to no praise for their successful efforts in putting off people gathering once more.

The fact Balogun is the most level-headed individual in this matter says a lot about the ineptitude of the SNP.

Thankfully he can show a human approach and understands the needs of the fans who celebrated.
