Ian Baraclough accuses media of trying to retire Rangers ace Steven Davis

Northern Ireland boss Ian Baraclough has accused national media of trying to retire Rangers midfielder, Steven Davis.

The Bears veteran equalled Peter Shilton’s cap record of 125 by Great British players against Italy and will look to pass that this weekend.

Despite his stunning season at Ibrox and consistent international performances, questions have been raised over his future at this level.

Speaking to Belfast Live after the defeat against Italy, Baraclough was full of praise for his inspirational skipper despite the result.

“Stop trying to retire him,” he said.

“Any questions about Steven Davis were put to bed hopefully because he was awesome in the middle of the park.

“Was his performance one of the positives of the night? Absolutely. He didn’t look out of place at all, as I knew he wouldn’t, so again, stop trying to retire him.”

Thriving.

If you asked Steven Gerrard to select one player he could always rely on at Ibrox, he would surely select the inspirational Davis.

The veteran has been around and seen it all during his career, and it wasn’t a sympathy action to hand him a new contract in Glasgow this week.

Davis kept 4.8% of Northern Ireland’s possession against Italy, the most of any player in their entire side, according to WhoScored.

There is no chance of Davis retiring soon, and he wants to go on to obliterate the record set by Shilton, something he will start this weekend.

Baraclough is spot, there is nothing to see here.
