Barry Ferguson thinks Rangers board will back Steven Gerrard and not look to sell
Barry Ferguson does not believe the Rangers board will be looking to sell players this summer and will instead continue to back Steven Gerrard.
Managing director Stewart Robertson revealed in December that Gers would have to sell players this summer in order to balance the books.
However, the run in Europe combined with the league win means finances may not be as bad as they once were.
The former Rangers star was asked about Glen Kamara’s possible contract extension, with a fan suggesting he thought the midfielder might be one to leave.
Ferguson replied on the The Go Radio Football Show, “This run in Europe and regaining the league title back, I’m just thinking that the Rangers board may say to the manager, ‘look we’ve got an opportunity to make it into the group stage of the Champions League, let’s try and keep our best players and let’s add to that’.
“I know money talks, if somebody comes in with a ridiculous offer they will need to consider it but I think the Rangers board at this moment in time will fully back Steven Gerrard and allow him to try and keep the ones he wants to keep.
“I think he’ll add some quality to it [the squad] because the best time to strengthen is when you’re on top.
“There are six assets in that Rangers team; Goldson, Barisic, Kamara, Aribo, Kent and Morelos…that’s the six I would probably say teams are looking at.”
Time to go again
Rangers can make a real statement about our ambition by keeping the current squad together for next season.
Already rumours have started with Lazio linked to Ianis Hagi [Gazetta Dello Sport] and speculation about Alfredo Morelos’ exit too [The Scotsman].
We clearly have a number of players wanted by big clubs so keeping them would highlight the strong position the club is in.
Champions League football must not be underplayed, in terms of both the finances it brings but also the appeal to players.
We have looked good in Europe under Stevie G and hopefully he can use our track record to convince players to stay.
Celtic will be aiming to come back stronger under a new manager and we must not show any signs of weakness by selling players.
We have to build on our title win if we want to properly re-assert ourselves as the best team in Scotland.
In other Rangers news, a super computer has made an exciting prediction that Gers fans will surely love.
