Selling Alfredo Morelos could prove a stroke of genius from Rangers board
Rangers could sell Alfredo Morelos in the summer and it could be a move that works out well for the club, the player and the fans.
The Scotsman report that the club could come to an agreement with the striker to sell him in the summer – an offer of £20million is thought to be too good to turn down.
Steven Gerrard is keen for Morelos to stay but recognises the Colombian may wish to leave so will not stand in his way.
At first that may appear to be a blow, but his departure could actually satisfy all the parties involved.
Morelos was keen to move last year with Lille one of the clubs interested.
Gerrard persuaded him to stay to win number 55 and now that goal has been completed Morelos could be moved on.
It is also possible that he was willing to stay as long as he got his move at the end of the season – that time has nearly come.
He has been a brilliant servant for us but £20m is a good fee in any climate, let alone one in which we made a loss of £15.9m for 2019.
Director Stewart Robertson stated that players will need to be sold in the summer because of that.
That is a disappointing reality we all have to accept, but if we sacrifice Morelos it may mean that we do not have to sell any other key players.
Income from the Champions League – as well as the attraction that brings – could allow us to sign an adequate replacement.
Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten should also jump at the chance to lead the line.
We risk an unhappy Morelos if we force him to stay yet again and that could lead to a downturn in his performances.
Allowing the 24-year-old to leave may be the best option and since Gerrard would not mind his exit we are behind it too.
The board will likely support a move due to the finances involved and that means only the supporters need satisfying.
The best way to do that is by showing ambition when bringing in his replacement – if an offer does come in for Morelos.
Do that and the board may just pull off a great piece of business this summer.
