Rangers could mutually agree Morelos exit in summer, £20m offer may be enough

Steven Gerrard will not stand in the way of Alfredo Morelos if the striker wants to leave Rangers for a high-profile move in the summer, according to the Scotsman.

The newspaper claims that the Gers could come to a mutual agreement with Morelos, 24, for him to move on in the summer transfer window and an offer of £20million would be too hard for the Premiership champions to turn down as they aim to become more financially sustainable.

It is understood that while Gerrard won’t force Morelos to stay at Ibrox, he would like to see the Colombia international stay an extra year and Champions League football could be a lure for the centre-forward.

El Bufalo to go?

Morelos was strongly linked with leaving Rangers last year and has never shied away from sharing his dream of one day playing in the Premier League or another one of Europe’s top leagues.

While he knows how big Rangers is after spending almost four seasons at Ibrox, there’s no denying there are bigger ponds for El Bufalo to swim in when it comes to leagues outside of Scotland.

And if he does decide to go this summer, we won’t begrudge him that because Morelos has done more than enough at Ibrox to go down as a modern-day hero.

Rangers

After playing a huge role in Rangers winning title number 55 this season, he netted his 55th league goal for the Gers on Sunday and his first in the Old Firm derby.

It seems like it could be a fitting end to Morelos’ Ibrox stay but with the prospect of Champions League football next season, it will be interesting to see if that could swap the Colombian’s mind.

The £30,000-a-week [AS] ace might want to wait and see how the Gers perform in Champions League qualifiers because, of course, we have a few games to play before reaching the group stages.

But, managing director Stewart Robertson has already hinted that player sales are needed to balance the books in Govan this summer.

Speaking in December, Robertson was quoted by BBC Sport as saying: “We know for the business model of the club we need to start moving one or two players a year.

“It won’t be a big turnover in the squad but that is something we need to do and something we’re really focused on for the summer.”

Morelos is arguably the most valuable player at Ibrox and selling him might mean that only one sale is needed this summer to ease the club’s finances.
