Slavia Prague look to get house in order with social media activity

Rangers fans will not have been impressed with a huge show of unity on the Slavia Prague Twitter page on Sunday.

It kicked off with a tweet from the club saying, “Today marks the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Slavia says a loud NO TO RACISM which has no place in football, in society or in our day-to-day lives.”

The accompanying video put out the same message and tried to hammer home Slavia Prague’s diversity.

It was followed by a stream of retweets from fans echoing the statement.

However, this flies in the face of the actions of the club after the explosive Europa League game on Thursday.

Straight after the game, they rejected Glen Kamara and Steven Gerrard’s version of events – that Ondřej Kúdela had racially abused the Rangers man.

They also hit back with an assault charge on Kamara.

This is not the actions of a club that want to do everything possible to stamp out racism in the game.

A charge as serious as this just can’t be dismissed because their player says he didn’t do it.

There’s process and their actions after the game do not sit well with anyone in the game who is genuinely concerned about racism.

The Twitter activity on Sunday just smacks of them getting their house in order in the face of the investigation that’s to come.

It’s easy to tweet hollow messages. It’s another to stand up and show that in the real world.

So far, Slavia Prague have been woefully inadequate there.
