Senior Scottish politician slams Rangers fans after Old Firm clash v Celtic

Cabinet minister Fiona Hyslop has slammed Rangers fans for congregating after the Old Firm clash on Sunday.

Rangers drew 1-1 and kept their unbeaten record intact at Parkhead, but the game itself wasn’t a classic.

Following the game, Hyslop tweeted, “So disappointed that fans in Armadale in my Constituency didn’t listen to the direct appeals from @RangersFC to stay at home after the game and not gather.

“Armadale has worryingly high Covid infection rates just now and this breach of regulations puts police and others at risk.”

Strength and character

First, we’d like to talk about the game on Sunday, which wasn’t a classic.

However, for the Gers players to pick themselves up after the brutal nature of Thursday’s Europa League exit, for what was effectively a dead rubber, shows the strength and character they’ve got – especially Kamara.

Generally, it seems that both sets of fans were well behaved after the game, although it was inevitable that some would hit the streets.

Thankfully, Hyslop’s message was measured and hit the right tone, which hasn’t always been the case with messages coming out from the Scottish government recently.

Hyslop actually points out that Rangers sent a message directly to fans to stay at home and that acknowledges the club can’t be held responsible for the actions of the few.

Hopefully, we’re coming out of the other end of a very difficult year.

We want fans back in Ibrox next season as we defend 55 and take on the Champions League.
