Scott Wright dazzles during cameo in Rangers 1-1 draw v Celtic

Scott Wright was in danger of becoming the forgotten Rangers man but his Celtic cameo shows there is a player bursting to emerge from the shadows.

The 23-year-old only joined the Light Blues from Aberdeen on February 1 and he could be forgiven for taking his time to assimilate into this title-winning Gers side.

He has to battle the likes of Ryan Kent, Ianis Hagi and Joe Aribo for a spot on the wings but his failure to make a start yet shows just how tough it has been for him at Ibrox so far.

However if his substitute display in Sunday’s Old Firm is anything to go by he now looks ready to roll up his sleeves and compete.

He was only on the field for 17 minutes but he suitably impressed with sheer pace and bright invention on the ball.

According to Wyscout Wright won 60% of his offensive duels [3/5] and completed a successful dribble and progressive run.

He was also successful with 86% of his passes [6/7].

Meanwhile Morelos won just 17% [2/11] of his offensive duels – that means he completed one less than Wright despite playing 60 minutes more.

They also completed the same number of dribbles [one].

We’re not suggesting Morelos deserves flak for his performance as he grabbed the all-important equaliser to end his four years of frustration in this fixture.

As ever he was a handful that looked like wreaking havoc whenever he got the ball.

Instead, this is more about highlighting the good work done by Wright and how he can break into this Gers team over the rest of the current campaign.

After Thursday night’s Europa League heartbreak and with the Premiership title wrapped up there is less pressure on the team and therefore fringe players should be handed an opportunity to impress.

Of course, that does not mean the remaining five league games mean nothing – there is still another Old Firm and the chance to remain unbeaten this season.

Rangers

This means there will still be an edge to the games and that is good news for Steven Gerrard and his coaching staff who will want to see Wright start games in pressurised surroundings.

There is still the small matter of a potential Scottish Cup run too, starting with lower-league Cove Rangers on April 3.

We only caught a fleeting glimpse of Wright against Celtic but it was enough to get us excited and we can’t wait to see him in full flight from the start of a game.
