Martin O’Neil ‘amazed’ at Celtic defence in Old Firm clash

Sky Sports pundit Martin O’Neil has said that he was “amazed” that Celtic didn’t have a defender on the back post when Alfredo Morelos scored his first Old Firm goal for Rangers on Sunday.

It was the equaliser in the 1-1 draw on Sunday as Rangers moved a big step closer to an Invincibles season.

Talking on Sky Sports after the game [Sky Sports, Sunday, 2pm), O’Neil said it was a very basic mistake from Celtic.

“I think if they had a man at the back post he would have been able to see that situation and deal with it before Morelos got it.

“I’m surprised, amazed that Celtic don’t have a man at the back post.

“You can place men anywhere defensively but the back post… someone’s going to get a flick whether it’s an inswinger or an outswinger. It has to be defended.”

Morelos silences critics

The old back post debate is one that always crops up after goals like this.

But, we’re not entirely sure a Celtic player would have been able to do anything about the Morelos goal even if he had been stood there.

The header from Morelos was an absolute bullet that smashed into the roof of the net. It looked unstoppable to us.

We’re absolutely delighted that he finally got his Old Firm goal.

Morelos has absolutely nothing to prove to anyone at Rangers but this will have been a personal triumph after a run against Celtic that can only be put down to coincidence.

It’s a shame that we couldn’t seize the momentum and go for the whitewash against Celtic but the Invincibles season is still alive and that would be the perfect end to what has been an incredible campaign.
