Police Scotland release statement after Rangers draw v Celtic
Police Scotland have thanked Rangers and Celtic for their cooperation after the Old Firm clash finished 1-1 on Sunday afternoon.
There were doubts over the game going ahead this afternoon after the Bears gathered in large groups after sealing the Scottish Premiership in the past month.
Steven Gerrard’s side kept their invincibles record intact this season despite not being at their best, with the lack of fans clearly affecting the performance.
Assistant Chief Constable Bernard Higgins confirmed in a statement that small groups did gather near Parkhead, but they were controlled immediately and dispersed.
“I’d like to thank the vast majority of fans from both clubs who took responsibility to prevent the spread of coronavirus by staying at home and not gathering at Celtic Park or anywhere else,” he said.
“Where small groups of people did gather, officers engaged and encouraged them to disperse and return home.
“I’m grateful for the co-operation and support from all clubs and we will continue to work with them and the Scottish Government to ensure the season can be completed safely.”
Nicola Sturgeon was consistently adding fuel to the fire in the past week, with her fears over crowds overshadowing the spectacle of the Old Firm.
This just proves everyone wrong, and that their fears were over the top.
We don’t believe there were any chance of fans gathering outside of Parkhead this afternoon, and it only happened last time because of the magnitude of the situation.
All of this made-up drama can be left in the past, and we can move forward to the second stage of the Scottish Premiership after the international break; bring it on.
This two-week break is much needed to get away from the negative media, and we can all prepare for it to return once domestic football is back.
