Neil McCann slams Leon Balogun in Rangers 1-1 draw v Celtic
Neil McCann has slammed Rangers defender Leon Balogun for his performance in the 1-1 draw against Celtic on Sunday afternoon.
The Nigerian international was pushed to right-back with James Tavernier and Nathan Patterson both struggling for fitness after injuries.
Balogun struggled throughout the clash at Parkhead and was eventually replaced by Patterson who could complete the final minutes of the draw.
Speaking on BBC Sportscene on Sunday evening, McCann singled out Balogun as one player who struggled against the pressure of Celtic.
“Without question, they do [miss Tavernier],” he said.
“Today there was no Patterson, who offers a slight dynamic going forward but not as potent as Tavernier, but with Balogun there, that threat is virtually gone.
“You think, maybe he’s a little more secure defensively, but I was watching him getting into half-time, he was breathing heavily because he knew that Elyounoussi was pulling on him.”
Not the best of afternoons.
Despite being tormented at times, Balogun will still return to Ibrox with a big assist and part of this incredible unbeaten side.
The experienced enforcer was playing out of position once again for Steven Gerrard, who would have severe problems without the versatility of his summer signing.
The 32-year-old did win three of his aerial duels and complete two tackles according to WhoScored, and despite some tough moments, he got through unscathed.
It may not have been the best of afternoons, but Balogun certainly didn’t let himself down when coming up against some real pressure in the Old Firm.
Once Tavernier returns at right-back, we will definitely see the best of Balogun in his favoured central position; that is guaranteed.
