Michael Stewart shares verdict on Celtic penalty shout in 1-1 draw v Rangers
Michael Stewart has insisted that Celtic didn’t deserve a penalty in the 1-1 draw against Rangers on Sunday afternoon.
Odsonne Edouard went down under pressure from Borna Barisic in the first half but was booked by Willie Collum for simulation rather than winning the decision.
Stewart believes it was the right decision, and actually found it funny that the likes of John Kennedy and Scott Brown believed it was a stonewall penalty.
Speaking on BBC Sportscene on Sunday evening, Stewart was actually on the side of the Bears for possibly the first time this season.
“I’m laughing because John Kennedy says there’s a touch,” he said.
“There is no touch. He’s absolutely spot on that it is reckless from Barisic, he runs a massive risk here, if Odsonne Edouard simply runs forward without lifting his leg, it’s a penalty.
“I can’t understand why he steps over Barisic’s leg, just step in.”
Are our eyes deceiving us?
We can’t believe it, Stewart has finally got one decision right when analysing the Bears this season after months of shocking punditry.
Edouard was not touched at all, and the fact that the Frenchman threw himself to the floor was a joke and he was rightly booked.
The striker also went down far too easily in the second half too and could have been lucky to not have been shown his marching orders, Alfredo Morelos wasn’t so lucky a couple of years ago.
There would have been outrage should this decision have been given, especially after that controversy at Livingston weeks ago, there has to be consistency.
