Contract talks likely to begin soon with Rangers-besotted James Tavernier – The Athletic
James Tavernier is happy at Rangers and is willing to stay at the club for the rest of his career, according to close family and friends.
The Light Blues captain has just led the club to a historic 55th title but his contract expires next summer and there is still no firm agreement in place to tie him down on an extended deal.
However, writing on The Athletic website Jordan Campbell says “talks will likely begin soon” over an extension and the Rangers reporter spoke to those nearest and dearest to Tavernier about his future.
His brother Marcus, who plays for Middlesbrough, said: “What’s not to like about playing for Rangers? He’s captain, he’s just won the league and he’s about to play Champions League football.
“Every player can only wish to do that, so for him to leave at some point would be the hardest decision he’s made.”
John Brannagan, a close friend and the man who was integral in bringing Tavernier to Ibrox, added: “He would stay for the rest of his career in a heartbeat. A team could bid for him but it’s not just about money with Tav. No matter where he finishes up, he will stay in Glasgow after football — 100 per cent.”
Numbers don’t lie
We are desperate to see Tav stay and prolong his Ibrox career. A new contract is the least he deserves as his numbers speak for themselves.
Injury has deprived him from our last six matches but his record before that was outstanding – 24 goal contributions in 38 matches [WhoScored] from right-back is mind-boggling.
Of course penalties are included in this total but 10 assists show just how vital he is in our build-up play as well and his delivery from wide areas is a joy to behold.
Despite Nathan Patterson’s recent emergence there is life in the old dog yet and Tav is still streaks ahead of the man 10 years his junior.
There could be a mini exodus this summer with players choosing to leave on a high but we must move heaven and earth to prevent Tav becoming one of them.
