Michael Stewart tears into Kemar Roofe after red card vs Slavia Prague

BBC pundit Michael Stewart says Kemar Roofe’s red card was indefensible and claimed Slavia Prague tactically outsmarted Rangers.

Stewart made it clear that he did not think Roofe’s actions were intentional but the outcome of the challenge meant the referee had no choice.

He chose not to criticise Rangers as he felt the opposition were effective at limiting Steven Gerrard’s side.

In the BBC’s live blog of the match, Stewart said, “It’s a horrible situation where something happens in a split second. You cannot defend it, it’s a definite red card, but I don’t think it’s malicious.”

Difficult night

It is a rare thing but Stewart has hit the nail on the head with his comments.

Roofe was going for the ball and had every right to do so but unfortunately caught Slavia Prague goalkeeper Ondřej Kolář instead.

It was a difficult game as Slavia Prague swamped Alfredo Morelos and gave the midfielders little time on the ball to influence the game in their usual style.

Roofe’s sending off did come at a crucial time however and but for that dismissal, things could have been a lot different.

The less said about Balogun’s red the better.

As for Steven Gerrard, he will no doubt be feeling disappointed but he has to encourage his squad and pick them up for the Old Firm.

They have been fantastic in Europe this season but they too must recognise Slavia Prague are a very good side.

We can still be proud with our efforts, and use this loss as motivation in the Champions League next season.

In other Rangers news, Slavia Prague have released a statement after one of their players was accused of racially abusing Glen Kamara.
