Lovenkrands slams referee for Kamara card in Rangers clash v Slavia Prague

Glen Kamara’s yellow card caused serious consternation among the BBC Sportsound pundits in the first-half of Rangers v Slavia Prague.

The 25-year-old was booked by referee Orel Grinfield after a coming together with a Slavia player late in the first half as the Czech outfit took a 1-0 lead.

Kamara looked to have won the ball before the collision and the referee’s decision seemed extremely harsh on the Rangers midfielder.

Speaking on BBC Sportsound [20:35, 18/03/21] Peter Lovenkrands was among those to hit out at the official.

“Ridiculous, that’s absolutely ridiculous that, you can’t book him for that. What can he do, he cannot stop when they come that quick,” he said.

“It’s not even a foul and he’s getting a booking for that.

“That frustrates me, that’s incredible.”

It was a shocking decision and one that meant Kamara would have missed the first-leg of any potential quarter-final after an accumulation of bookings across the competition.

Slavia Prague put paid to that.

But how the referee could see that in real-time and deem it a certain booking is completely beyond us.

Kamara clearly won the ball first by a distance and his momentum took him into the Slavia player. There was no way he could avoid the collision.

In no way did he endanger the opponent and if anything it could have been our free-kick.

If we thought the officials in our own league were bad we were handed a reminder that this is nothing isolated to the Scottish Premiership.

In such a hotly-contested and fast-paced affair there are going to be comings together, that is the nature of the game.

No wonder Steven Gerrard was so visibly frustrated on the sidelines.
