Kemar Roofe shares flood of racist messages sent to him after Rangers loss

Kemar Roofe has taken to Instagram to share the flood of racist messages that were sent to him after Rangers’ 2-0 defeat to Slavia Prague in the Europa League.

Roofe, 28, was shown a straight red card in the 61st minute after a nasty high challenge on Slavia’s goalkeeper Ondrej Kolar.

After the game, Steven Gerrard revealed Glen Kamara told him he was racially abused during the second leg defeat at Ibrox.

Unfortunately, the sickening abuse continued on social media after the game for Roofe.

Writing on his personal Instagram account, Roofe said “I could be here all night screenshotting all of these types of comments.”

Sickening

Roofe’s challenge on Kolar was a shocker and we hope the Slavia goalkeeper is okay and makes a full recovery.

But there’s nothing that excuses the vile abuse that was sent to the Rangers forward after the match on social media.

Social media companies are not doing enough to clamp down on racism – especially Instagram.

Manchester United’s Anthony Martial was racially abused on the social media platform last month and many users complained about how they would report accounts being racist, only to have a notification back from Instagram saying they didn’t break any rules.

Kick It Out chief Troy Townsend was quoted by the Mirror as saying: “Here we go again. It’s so predictable now, it makes a mockery of Instagram’s comments this week.

“I wonder if this account will be barred for a month and collect their ‘Insta slap on the wrist’ and ‘don’t do that again’ talk?”

Roofe is sadly one of many victims and unfortunately, he won’t be the last.

Is there really any need for this? Roofe’s challenge was a bad one but to resort to that level of abuse says a lot about the person posting it, especially when they’re hiding behind an anonymous account.
