Gary Caldwell says Rangers ‘lack class’ ahead of Old Firm derby

Ex-Celtic captain Gary Caldwell has taken a swipe at Rangers ahead of the Old Firm derby at Parkhead on Sunday.

Steven Gerrard’s side travel to managerless Celtic having been crowned Champions of Scotland for the 55th time. It’s the first league title in a decade for the Gers, and stopped Celtic from going 10 in a row.

Speaking with Sky Sports News on Thursday [13.45 pm], Caldwell encouraged his side to do the respectful thing, after taking a dig at the Gers. He said: “In my opinion, they should.

“A lot of the supporters will obviously disagree with that. But Rangers haven’t done it in the past and I think that shows a lack of class.

“I think Celtic should be bigger than that and should have the humility to respect Rangers for what they’ve achieved this season. And also use that feeling for next season as motivation to win the league title back.

“I think they should show Rangers the respect and do it on Sunday.”

‘Breaking tradition’

You’ve got to laugh really. Another unwarranted dig from someone associated with Celtic ahead of the Old Firm. Whether or not we’re clapped onto the pitch, we’re still going to give them the run around on their own patch.

It’s a shame that they couldn’t pick up a win last weekend. It would have been all that bit sweeter to clinch the title at Parkhead on Sunday. It shows how good life is at the moment for this to be our only issue, though.

That said, their former boss Neil Lennon made quite the statement in 2019. According to the Scottish Sun, he said that to not give a guard of honour is ‘breaking tradition’, and that they’d be willing to do it if was the other way round. It’s a shame Lennon isn’t still the boss, or he’d have to do it.

Whatever happens on Sunday, it’ll be very enjoyable indeed. An Old Firm derby with no pressure whatsoever.
