Peter Martin: Clubs will be desperate to hire Rangers boss Gerrard
PLZ host Peter Martin claims “clubs will be battering down Rangers’ door” for manager Steven Gerrard if the Gers continue to impress in the Europa League.
Gerrard has done a magnificent job at Ibrox, undoing nine years of Celtic dominance in the Scottish Premiership and leading the Govan club to the Europa League’s last-16 twice.
On Thursday night, Gerrard has the chance to lead the Light Blues to the quarter-finals and ex-STV broadcaster Martin believes that if he manages that, there’ll be clubs trying to hire him as their next boss.
“Getting into the last-eight, getting even further with Rangers in this tournament, which for me is a real prospect, suddenly you start to say to yourself there’ll be a clamour for him,” said Martin on PLZ Soccer’s latest episode of The Football Show on YouTube.
“Clubs will be battering down Rangers’ door trying to get him as their manager. His stocks already going [up] for me.”
Hands off
Gerrard has not offered any hint that he will be looking to quit Rangers at the end of this season.
While he’s achieved something massive in winning the Premiership title and taking the club to the Europa League’s last-16 on two occasions, his work at Ibrox is anything but complete.
Winning the title is one thing but defending it against a Celtic team that will be desperate to bounce back next season will be another.
Rangers will also be a Champions League club next season. A Champions League-winning player like Gerrard will surely want to manage in Europe’s biggest competition.
If Gerrard is going to quit Ibrox then we don’t see him doing it unless it was to move to Liverpool.
Jurgen Klopp has distanced himself from replacing Joachim Low as the next Germany manager and while things aren’t all rosy at Anfield at the minute, it would still take a lot for Klopp to be sacked.
We’re confident Gerrard won’t be going anywhere this summer but that doesn’t mean there’ll be phonecalls made to Douglas Park and Ross Wilson.
He’s going to be a wanted man.
In other Rangers news, Trevor Sinclair has embarrassed himself with an ill-timed jab about the Old Firm’s existence.
