Kenny Miller raves about ‘Outstanding’ Rangers ace Alfredo Morelos
Kenny Miller claims Alfredo Morelos is bound to be the subject of transfer speculation due to his performances at Rangers.
Morelos, 24, has been on fire in front of goal ever since arriving at Ibrox in 2017 from HJK Helsinki. And since then, it seems as though he’s been linked with a move away from Glasgow in every single transfer window.
Speculation was at its peak last summer when Lille were strongly linked with a move for the Colombia international, who eventually stayed put at Rangers and battled through months of stuttering form to find himself firing on all cylinders as he has been lately.
Speaking ahead of two massive matches for Rangers this week against Slavia Prague in the Europa League and Celtic in the Premiership, ex-Gers and Hoops striker Miller claimed that Morelos’ form in Europe is what has led to clubs eyeing him up.
“There’s been speculation about Alfredo since he came to the club because he was a young striker, scoring a lot of goals, getting a lot of headlines,” Miller told Sky Sports.
“He’s run some really good defences ragged over the years, particularly in Europe, and I think that’s where people take notice, including teams on the continent.
“He seems to be refocused. It’s been a wonderful year for the club and him. He’s not scoring as many goals as he has done maybe, but he is a big contributor to that team.
“When he is not playing, they miss that physical element upfront because he can work a back-four, back-five whatever it is – he has terrorised some big players over the last two or three years.”
While Morelos has been in immense form during his time at Rangers, he’s yet to score in the Old Firm derby against Celtic.
Miller believes he could end his derby day goal drought at Celtic Park on Sunday.
He added: “Alfredo has scored important goals in big games, it has just been a goal in this game that’s eluded him. He has had big chances but it would not surprise me if he goes and gets that goal.
“He’s been an outstanding signing since the minute he came to this club. The goals he has scored in big games, both domestically and in Europe have been outstanding. His performances have been good.
“He’s always been in good goalscoring form, so it would be no surprise if he breaks his duck on Sunday.”
Morelos speculation inevitable
In December, managing director Stewart Robertson confirmed that Rangers will need to sell players in the summer in order to balance their books.
The Premiership champions posted a yearly loss of £15.9million up to June 30, 2020 and needs to raise £23million by the end of next season.
While chairman Douglas Park and director John Bennett will cover that with loans, player sales are also something to boost the coffers at Ibrox.
Morelos is potentially the most valuable player the Gers have on their books.
Even though he cost just £1million in 2017, the striker has since scored 92 times in 174 appearances in all competitions for Rangers, helped them win a league title and reach the last-16 of the Europa League twice as well as winning six caps for Colombia.
Morelos is a major asset and if anyone is going to raise the club some cash it’s going to him.
But he’s not the only one.
Glen Kamara, Ryan Kent, Connor Goldson, Borna Barisic and Joe Aribo are all likely to raise a healthy profit for the club if they’re moved on in the summer.
We don’t want to see anyone go but we are realistic and understand that in order to progress, player sales have to be made.
It’s a harsh reality and at least if El Bufalo or any of his team-mates are sold this summer, they will exit Ibrox as title-winning heroes.
In other Rangers news, Peter Martin claims clubs will be knocking on the Gers’ doors for this Ibrox man.
