Sturgeon’s Old Firm cancellation claims are nothing more than an empty threat to Rangers fans

This weekend’s Old Firm game has come under scrutiny after the suggestion was made that it may be called off if Rangers and Celtic fans can’t behave themselves.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has repeatedly claimed that the game is at risk of being called off after Rangers fans took to the streets to celebrate the recent title win.

She doubled down on this earlier in the week as she said that a decision was yet to be made over whether the game will go ahead.

Sturgeon is quoted by Sky Sports as saying, “I spoke to the chief constable personally last week on his views on what might transpire if the Old Firm match goes ahead. We will be in further contact with police over the course of this week.”

Give over.

Of course the Old Firm will be on this weekend.

Can you imagine the scenes on the streets of Glasgow if the game got called off?

These are empty threats from the government as they try to make it look like they’re doing the right thing.

They’ve positioned themselves in such a way so they can be in the ‘we told you so’ camp when some fans inevitably gather on Sunday.

There is simply no way, just a few days before one of the biggest days on the Scottish footballing calendar, Sturgeon says the game can’t go ahead.

Not only would she have to deal with the wrath of Rangers and Celtic fans but she’d also have to deal with Sky Sports who won’t be pleased that one of their showpiece matches won’t be going ahead.

There is too much already in motion for the game to be called off, it just won’t happen.

Calling the game off will do more harm than good this weekend as if the game is cancelled, fans will still meet up.

Either just because they want to or in protest over the decision.

We don’t condone any potential gathering of Gers fans this weekend and like the club, we would urge all fans to watch and celebrate from home for reasons that should be blindingly obvious.

The game will be on, have no doubt about that.

The only question we have is why Sturgeon is carrying on this facade.
