McLeish Exclusive: Tavernier could be annoyed by emerging Rangers defender Patterson

We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…

Alex McLeish has suggested that Rangers star James Tavernier could get annoyed by the emergence of Nathan Patterson during his injury problem.

The Bears skipper has been missing since the Royal Antwerp clash in the Europa League back in February and still hasn’t returned.

McLeish believes that Tavernier will be itching to return from his problem, especially after the success of Patterson this month.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “It looks that way with the young mans’ performances.

“James will be the type of guy who wants to play every week, he’s the captain. He would be annoyed if he’s getting left out too much.

“We’re all competitive, and he won’t want to be replaced by a young star, and that will be the one thing most in James’ mind to get back playing.

“He has now got a brilliant lieutenant.”

Patterson has been nothing short of brilliant, but with a ban on the horizon for breaching COVID-19 protocols, we need options.

Steven Gerrard has been delighted with the impact of the youngster, but it will be business as usual once the skipper returns, hopefully soon.

With the Europa League reaching the business end, should the Bears get past Slavia Praha, the return of Tavernier will be a huge boost for the quarter-finals.
