Mark Warburton: Gerrard has been magnificent but board must continue backing him
Mark Warburton is impressed with what Steven Gerrard has done at Rangers but reiterated the need for the board to support the manager.
He claims the backing given to Gerrard has enabled him to take Rangers to the next level – something he failed to do himself during his spell at Ibrox.
He praised Gerrard’s leadership in the dugout and his wise spending but suggests the club cannot afford to stagnate.
In an interview with Football Pass, he said, “He’s [Gerrard] done an excellent job, a magnificent job.
“The board have supported him I’ve made it very clear to close that gap you have to back the manager.
“Even when you have that backing you have to use it wisely, you’ve got to get your message across to the players, instil your style of play.
“I think Steven’s done a magnificent job, he deserves enormous credit but I’m sure he’d be the first to say this is the first step and they will want to continue building.”
It is interesting that Warburton focuses on the backing Gerrard has received.
We are sure he is not bitter about the way he left Rangers but it seems as though he wished for greater spending power when he was boss.
After all, in his final season at Auchenhowie his most expensive signing was Joe Garner for a reported fee of £1.8million.
That shows the limitations he had to work under.
Fortunately, Stevie G has been given greater financial backing, signing Ryan Kent and Kemar Roofe for decent fees and likely spending a lot on the salaries of Allan McGregor and Steven Davis, amongst others.
We agree with Warburton that we cannot rest on what we have achieved this season.
Celtic did that and faced big consequences.
We need new faces to keep key players on their toes and reinvigorate the squad ahead of another important next season next year.
