Report: Rangers keen on Britt Assombalonga

Steven Gerrard wants to bring Middlesbrough striker Britt Assombalonga to Rangers, according to GiveMeSport.

The report claims that the 28-year-old, who is out of contract in the summer, might have to take a pay-cut to stay at the Riverside.

That salary is reported to be £35,000-a-week with Assombalonga said to be the highest earner at the club.

Rangers could sign him on a pre-contract deal ahead of a move as a free agent in the summer.

Decent squad option

Assombalonga has struggled in the 20/21 season after his big-money move to Middlesbrough in 2017.

He signed for £15m and scored 15, 14 and 11 goals in his first three seasons with the club.

However, he’s only got five in 29 this season and with the suggested wage cut and losing the captaincy, Warnock isn’t going out of his way to try to keep the striker at the Riverside.

Could he come up north of the border and resurrect his career?

It would be a step up for the striker and he hasn’t had any experience above Championship level.

However, coming without a fee attached makes him a more attractive option and it would mean Rangers could offer perhaps more favourable terms in wages.

He would be a good squad option but surely no better than Alfredo Morelos or Kemar Roofe? And we wouldn’t want to lose either of them to bring him in.
