Cedric Itten explains why he has not hit best form for Rangers

Cedric Itten is happy with his contribution at Rangers this season but believes he is capable of showing even more at Ibrox.

The striker has failed to gain a regular starting place under Steven Gerrard and has scored only six goals as a result.

However, he believes his lack of pre-season has contributed to his difficulties, with the 24-year-old playing for former side FC St.Gallen throughout June and July last year.

That means he has not had a break from playing football for eight months.

He told Swiss Radio and Television (SRF), “I was very well received by the team and I think I played my part in the title.

“But it wasn’t easy for me because the team had already been preparing for seven weeks in the summer and I came straight out of the season.”

More to come

Itten has not had the easiest time since his move to Rangers but he has contributed in key moments this season.

He has also secured a place as the number one deputy to Alfredo Morelos, ahead of Jermain Defoe.

Rangers

The Swiss has scored key goals against Lech Poznan and Royal Antwerp in the Europa League and grabbed an equaliser in a tough game at Motherwell in January.

Without that goal we likely would not boast our unbeaten record so we should be thankful for Itten’s efforts.

However, the forward does need to show more in front of goal.

We could lose Alfredo Morelos this summer and should that happen Itten would need to step-up.

The remaining few matches could provide Itten with a regular run in the team but he must improve on his last start, against Kilmarnock.

He had a pass accuracy of just 60% in that game and contributed just one shot, per WhoScored.

Regardless of whether or not he had a pre-season that return is not good enough for any Rangers attacker, and we expect him Itten to raise his game soon.
