Barry Ferguson shoots down Gerrard to Crystal Palace suggestion, says Rangers are ‘far bigger’

Barry Ferguson has rubbished suggestions Steven Gerrard could leave Rangers for Crystal Palace and says he is going nowhere this summer.

Appearing on ‘The Go Radio Football Show’ [15/03/21] host Paul Clooney suggested Gerrard could be in the frame for the Crystal Palace job if Roy Hodgson vacates the Selhurst Park hot-seat but former Gers captain Ferguson served up a fiery response.

“In terms of Crystal Palace there is no comparison with Rangers, Rangers are a far bigger club,” he said.

“At some stage he will look to maybe go and try his hand down south in the Premier League but he has only delivered one trophy so far, they still have the Scottish Cup and they are in the last 16 of the Europa League.

“They have a real good chance of reaching the last eight. I firmly believe he will be at Rangers for a year or two.”

No Palace dramas

To suggest Gerrard would swap the lure of the Champions League for mid-table mediocrity is utterly laughable.

He might very well be on their shortlist but it is not even worthy of their time to jot his name down – we are prepared to stick our necks out and say there is no chance he heads to South London this summer.

The size of our clubs is incomparable and Gerrard still has unfinished business in Glasgow.

He will want to lead us into the Champions League group stages and experience the adulation of the fans for at least one season more.

The lockdown restrictions have prevented Gers supporters from expressing their Ibrox love this season and Gerrard will be desperate to feel that roar once more.

If and when Gerrard does eventually leave it will be for an elite-level institution like Liverpool, a club close to his heart.

We won’t begrudge that move later down the line but he has more work to do here and a move to Palace would be nonsensical.
