‘Have to question that’ – Barnes makes baffling claim about Rangers and Gerrard

John Barnes insists Rangers boss Steven Gerrard won’t be offered the Liverpool job if he fails to compete with Celtic over the next few years.

Gerrard won his first trophy as Gers boss last week and naturally he has been linked with a potential move back to his old club.

Barnes, a former Celtic boss, told BonusCodeBets that Gerrard isn’t ready to take the Anfield job and he has still has plenty to prove before his contract runs out in 2024.

Rangers

He said, “If Steven continues what he’s doing by making sure Rangers compete all the way with Celtic for the title or can even win another title with Rangers, then in 2024, when it’s time for Klopp to leave, Gerrard would have had sufficient experience to take on a big club like Liverpool.

“However, if it comes to 2024 and Rangers have been finishing third and not competing with Celtic, then you’d have to question that.

“If it comes to 2024 and Steven has continued doing extremely well at Rangers, then he’d be my next choice as Liverpool manager after Jurgen Klopp leaves.”

Rangers

What more does Gerrard need to prove?

He’s improved Rangers to an almost unimaginable extent over the past three years and has wrestled the title back from Celtic.

Let’s not forget he’s also on the verge of an unbeaten league season and progressing well in Europe.

We’ve all seen this coming for quite some time now, this simply isn’t a fluke.

Perhaps some of Barnes’ Celtic bias has boiled to the surface here as if Gerrard does continue to be successful in the next few years it will simply prove what we already know.

He’s an excellent coach who would make a very good crack of any job handed to him.

Of course, we don’t want Gerrard to leave but to suggest he doesn’t have the relevant experience to take over at Liverpool is a bit of a stretch.
