Glasgow City Council request £11k in reparations from Rangers fans

Glasgow City Council have sent an £11,000 bill to Rangers fans for damages after the cost of the title wreckage was detailed in the Scottish Sun.

Hundreds of Gers fans took to the streets of Glasgow on March 7 to celebrate confirmation of title No.55 after Steven Gerrard’s side stopped Celtic dreams of 10-in-a-row in emphatic style.

However the result of some over-exuberance was damage to the city centre and the Scottish Sun have reported the full extent of this.

As per their website it will cost over £4,000 to repair and replace memorial benches that were wrecked in Georges Square while a similar fee will be required to replant the flower beds surrounding them.

Furthermore the city council say damage to lawns at the eastern end of the square will cost in the region of £3,000 and that they will send the current bill of £11,407 to a publican who organised an online fundraiser to pay for the damages caused.

Recognise responsibility and learn lessons

We have to be honest there – this is not a great look for Gers fans.

For all the bottled-up emotion that has been bursting to break free for a decade some of the scenes in the city centre were unacceptable and some fans will now have to cough up to right their wrongs.

But it is equally important to recognise that this was a minority of supporters and the majority were well-behaved and respectful in their celebrations.

Even the ones that did cross the line should not be harangued to the high heavens given the current predicament the country finds itself in.

Life has been tough for the last year with all of the Covid-19 restrictions in place and that, coupled with the long wait to achieve No.55, obviously brought up a lot of raw emotions, some of which spilled over to create the madness witnessed on that triumphant weekend.

The online fundraiser set up shows the compassion of Gers fans and lessons have been learned.

It’s time to pay the way and move on.
