Kevin Thomson labels Rangers keeper Allan McGregor as best he has played with
Rangers B team coach Kevin Thomson has labelled Allan McGregor as the best goalkeeper that he’s ever played with.
The former Scotland international claimed that his old teammate deserves all of the plaudits he’s been getting this week as the stopper played a huge role in Rangers 1-1 draw away to Slavia Prague.
He made a stunning last-minute save to take a draw back to Ibrox, as Steven Gerrard’s side look to progress to the quarter-final of the Europa League.
Speaking to Mail Sport, Thomson labelled the 39-year-old as ‘possessed’ in his efforts to prevent goals going in. He said: “Greegsy is easily the best I’ve ever played with.
“We’re not just talking about one save with Greegsy. We’re talking about multiple unbelievable saves in his career so far. He has the right to sit at the top of the tree when it comes to goalkeepers.
“I’ve never seen a goalkeeper in my career who is so possessed and so desperate to keep the ball out of the net as him.
“He deserves all the plaudits he’s getting. The unfortunate thing for goalkeepers is that they never seem to get the same recognition as outfield players.”
One more year?
Gerrard surely has to offer the towering keeper a contract extension. Now 39, McGregor is unlikely to want to go and play for another club, but he proved his worth on Thursday with a stunning save in the dying moments.
McGregor has played a huge role for Rangers this season as they’ve clinched their first title for 10 years. He’s played 23 times in the Scottish top-flight, and eight times in the Europa League, as the club remain undefeated in both competitions.
Thomson gave big praise to McGregor, claiming he ranks above Rangers legend Stefan Klos. The German made over 200 appearances for the Gers, winning 10 titles overall. McGregor is just shy of 300 appearances, the 55th Scottish League title for Rangers was his 12th trophy with the club.
Such a club legend is surely deserving to go out on his own terms, in front of a packed out Ibrox. Gerrard has got everything right so far and signing McGregor down would be another correct step.
