Exclusive: Alex McLeish thrilled by Rangers talent Nathan Patterson
We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Alex McLeish has been hugely impressed by Rangers talent Nathan Patterson after his breakthrough in recent weeks.
The young defender has come into the side due to the absence of James Tavernier and has played a vital role in the Scottish Premiership and the Europa League.
McLeish believes it could save the Bears up to £40million by bringing players such as Patterson through the academy.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “Listen, he has not got all the answers, but he will still be able to pick some things up.
“He looks as though he’s a quick learner, and coming into these last couple of games, I’ve been hugely impressed by the kid.
“Coming through the academy, that doesn’t happen a lot in the system. When you do that, and you don’t have to spend that £40million, it’s a godsend.”
Steven Gerrard will have been delighted by the impact made by his young talent in the past couple of weeks.
After Patterson breached COVID-19 protocols, it could have been overwhelming to be thrown into the limelight, but he has responded perfectly.
Gerrard claimed he has “become a man” and that is exactly the type of praise he will have been hunting after the huge clash with Slavia Praha.
With Tavernier still injured, the defender could get the opportunity to feature in the Old Firm against Celtic, the dream of every young Bears talent.
Patterson has started superbly, but this is only the beginning.
