Kris Boyd believes Rangers number one Allan McGregor is Scotland’s greatest ever goalkeeper, and suggests Premier League clubs will regret not making a move for him.
McGregor won numerous plaudits for his performance against Slavia Prague on Thursday, but his former teammate Boyd has been his biggest fan.
The ex-striker compared him to former Gers great Andy Goram in his column for the Scottish Sun, and remarked on the transfer that brought the 39-year-old back to Ibrox.
“For me, Rangers’ current No 1 is Scotland’s best. As an all-rounder, he stands alone,” said Boyd.
“For Rangers to pick him up on a free from Hull City is incredible business.
“The time was right for him to come back home, but top Premier League clubs must be asking why they didn’t go for him.”
To be compared to Goram shows just how good McGregor is.
He has arguably been in the best form of his career over the last few months which is outstanding considering his age.
Recent saves against Celtic and Slavia Prague to deny Leigh Griffiths and Lukas Masopust were sublime, and he provides so much off the pitch too.
His response to the draw against Hamilton helped to galvanise the squad and since then we have won four out of four league games and scored nine goals in the process.
He is a strong presence in the dressing room and his experience is valuable for the younger players in the squad.
Now the club must do whatever it can to persuade the Gers legend to stay another year.
Steven Gerrard confirmed McGregor is in discussions so that is a positive sign, and hopefully the fact he is playing so well means he wants to continue.
