Chris Sutton claims ‘good number’ of Rangers fans wanted Steven Gerrard gone
Chris Sutton has warned Rangers fans they are lucky they did not get what they wished for after claiming a section wanted Steven Gerrard out of the club.
Gerrard is regarded as a Gers deity at the moment after inspiring the club to the Premiership title and No.55 but Sutton claims all was not rosy at the beginning of the current campaign.
Writing in his Daily Record column the former Celtic striker pointed to animosity amongst Rangers fans at the lack of Light Blues success between 2018-20.
“All the time Gerrard was putting his building blocks in place and the patience was there within the boardroom to let him go again even when some fans didn’t want it,” he said,
“Let’s not change history. A good number of Rangers supporters felt Gerrard’s time was up at the end of last season when he went two years without a trophy and not many managers in Glasgow get two campaigns without any silverware, if any.”
Meddling Sutton
This is just more sour grapes from Sutton – he can’t bear the sweet success we are currently tasting.
Even after an utterance of congratulations through gritted teeth he could not resist taking a wild swipe at our supporters.
He claims some fans wanted Gerrard out as if there was ever a significant portion that held that voice.
If there were those with that belief they were drowned out by the rest of us who saw the masterplan and believed in Gerrard. And there are always dissenting views within football.
Gerrard has stuck by his principles and we are now reaping the rewards of that.
Sutton might have a historical point on the topic of managers not getting too much time at Ibrox without winning a trophy but this was a unique challenge that had no resemblance to our past glories – we were plying our trade in the Third Division as recently as 2013.
Keep your sneering to yourself, Sutton.
