Ally McCoist and Chris Sutton debate Steven Gerrard’s Rangers investment plea

Ally McCoist fears Steven Gerrard could be left with no alternative on his future if fresh investment is not breathed into this triumphant Rangers side.

The Light Blues are high on the success of clinching the Premiership title and No.55 that came with it but there could be trouble on the horizon if the Gers hierarchy do not aid Gerrard in his quest to assert the club as a European powerhouse.

Provided they navigate the play-offs without any hitches Rangers will be showcasing their talents in the Champions League group stage next season and while that is an exciting scenario, McCoist thinks more is needed in order to be competitive in the competition and keep Gerrard at the club.

Appearing on BT Sport Scottish Football Extra [18:30, 12/03/21] Chris Sutton posed the question after an interview with the Rangers boss where he called for money to be ploughed into transfers.

Sutton said: “Okay Stevie wants investment, what if he doesn’t get the investment?”

McCoist replied: “Then he’ll have a decision to make because as good as the team is…

“I still believe there would have to be additions to compete at the next level and the next level is a big jump and it’s Champions League.”

What Stevie wants, Stevie gets

Let’s not beat around the bush here – this Gers side needs significant investment to reach the next level and compete with the big boys.

That is not to discredit the significant achievements by the current crop of players who have been magnificent servants to the club and many will be on the ride with us on our future endeavours.

But some need to be shipped out and, more importantly, new players need to be brought in.

That does not mean we just sign any player – they have to be of sufficient quality to be able to break into the starting XI.

We don’t want to sign a plethora of squad players who hang around the fringes just to collect their pay packets.

We need high-quality, hungry players who are going to make a real difference to the team and drag us up to the standards Gerrard is envisaging.

That is why he has made a public plea.

There is no posturing just to make airwaves, Gerrard knows what he needs and he will not accept anything less.

Give him what he wants, or risk his departure.
