Steven Gerrard: Allan McGregor in contract talks with the club
Allan McGregor was the star of the show against Slavia Prague and Steven Gerrard confirmed that he is in talks with Rangers over extending his deal.
The goalkeeper is 39 but Gerrard revealed he is desperate to keep him for at least another year in his post-match press conference.
He heaped praise on the shot-stopper and hinted that the ball is firmly in his court when it comes to extending his current deal.
As quoted by Clyde 1 journalist Andrew Maclean, Gerrard said, “I’ve spoken before about how much we rate Allan, how much we love him here, how much we want him to carry on.
“He knows what’s on the table. He’s in discussions… I hope we get it over the line and sign him up for another year.”
Vital move
Tying down McGregor for another year has to be the priority over the next few weeks.
The same can be said of Steven Davis, too, but we will likely find it easier to find a new midfielder than to replace the veteran goalkeeper.
McGregor is a huge presence at the back and helps out the defence with his leadership and organisation.
Rangers have conceded just seven goals in 23 league games with the £13,000 a week star between the posts.
Moreover, his outburst criticising his teammates after the Hamilton match a few weeks ago shows he is a big presence in the dressing room.
Money can buy talent but there are few players who possess such know-how and authority.
His late save against Slavia Prague proves he is still up there with the best – it was a stop Stevie G described as “world class”.
Hopefully McGregor realises he still has so much to give and perhaps our success this season has spurred him on the stay another year.
It will be brilliant for him to play out his final year in front of a packed-out Ibrox.
