Neil Lennon makes on-air Slavia Prague gaffe before Europa League clash with Rangers
Neil Lennon has been chasing the shadows of Rangers all season and it looks like he is still suffering from a bout of Old Firm hallucination.
He was recently sacked as Celtic manager but he hasn’t taken long to stick his head up above the parapet and immerse himself back into the footballing world by trying his hand again at punditry.
But it didn’t go quite to plan as he exposed his lack of awareness this season in a mishap that sums up their shocking season on the green side of Glasgow.
In the build-up to Manchester United v AC Milan on BBC Radio Five Live [18:00, 11/03/21] Lennon was asked: “You’ll know plenty about Slavia Prague as well because they were in your group this season.”
The sacked Celtic manager replied: “Very good side, no mugs, no mugs whatsoever, very good side. Hungry as well.”
But of course, Neil, you never played them. It was in fact their bitter rivals Sparta Prague that they came up against in the group stages of the Europa League before being booted out.
A case of catching the wording wrongly? Perhaps.
We think it is probably more reflective of how disengaged he and Celtic have been this season.
That level of detail is never lost on Steven Gerrard – he is too sharp-witted to be caught out by something like that.
Unfortunately for Lennon he is watching on the sidelines while Gerrard continues our ascent in Europe.
The same can be said for Sparta Prague – they were dumped out at the same stage as our Old Firm foes as Lille and AC Milan emerged triumphant from their groups.
Slavia are clearly the superior Prague on the basis of European results and their league standing, 11 points clear of their rivals, and the same can be said in Glasgow as we ride high in Europe and sit 20 points ahead in the Premiership table.
They’ve all lost their heads on the other side, even those who have managed to escape the hell-hole.
